My story, including how I became a tutor, is a story of my natural curiosity.
As soon as I could learn and read, as soon as I intended elementary school, I learned ravenously–& taught frequently: my [] & [] were my first students. I learned all I could about Greek mythology, [what I read…]–& negative numbers. I had a fortunate string of good elementary school students, including my sixth grade teachers: I remember being fascinated by a lesson of green & red bears on an overhead projector, representing how adding negative numbers is the same as subtracting positive ones.
I glad to say that my curiosity continued strong in my adolescent years, through middle & high school: I engaged myself in US history, physics, poetry–& in math, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, & Calculus; I was particularly interested in variables, constructing geometric proofs, & the trigonometric functions sine, cosine, & tangent. During this time, I continued teaching & guiding people, predominantly through the Boy Scouts, where, as an Eagle Scout & leader, I taught wilderness survival skills, [leadership…]
My college years took me through an unusual path that twisted & turned for a number of reasons, one of which was my fascination in an array of disciplines. Starting as a physics major at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, I then went on to two Connecticut community colleges, Southern University, & then Kent State University, where I completed my Masters in Library & Information Science. I was during these studies that I taught professionally for the first time; as a math tutor, I prepared middle & high school students for their SATs & their math class exams & assignments. I also began my library career, where I regularly use the compassion, teaching ability, & patience that four years of tutoring helped develop.
In the past eleven years, I have gone from Library Assistant to Teen Librarian and now to Reference Librarian at Bridgeport Public Library in Bridgeport, CT. Teaching people have been a professional responsibility & active part of my daily work; along with assisting patrons on how to use technology, I have recently co-taught a class on Google Chrome, & I teach adult literacy in the library for the Literacy Volunteers.
These days, I act on my curiosity through reading, including books on management & psychology, as well as 101 Quantum Questions & Math Through the Ages. & I am happy to say that, as a teacher & student, the tables have turned with my siblings & me: my [], an opera administrator & professional musician, gives me book suggestions, including on business & management; & my [], a doctorate in astrophysics, is my go to for questions on astronomy & statistics.
